Bancroft Hall, located at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, stands as both an architectural landmark and a symbol of naval tradition. As the largest single college dormitory in the world, it houses the entire Brigade of Midshipmen. This historic structure has been undergoing an extensive, multi-phase renovation aimed at preserving its legacy while ensuring its durability and functionality for generations to come. Central to this effort is the meticulous restoration of the building’s monumental granite stairs, an undertaking that reflects both the technical complexity and the reverence required when working on a structure of such national significance.
For the first time in nearly 120 years, the iconic granite steps at Bancroft Hall’s main entrance were removed from their original setting. Quarried in the early 1900s, these massive stone steps have supported countless ceremonial formations, daily marches, and the rhythms of midshipman life. Far from being purely decorative, the stairs are engineered to accommodate thousands of marching midshipmen and to endure extraordinary wear. Their restoration demanded high level of precision and care befitting their historical and functional importance.
Rugo Stone, entrusted with this critical scope of work, executed a comprehensive restoration that included the removal and resetting of existing granite treads across the lower and middle stair sections, upper landings, and upper stairs. Additional work encompassed removing and resetting granite site wall coping, cleaning interior stone walls at the Smoke Hall, re-pointing site brick walls, and repairing existing brick stem-walls beneath the granite treads. Each task was performed with strict adherence to historic preservation standards.
The successful removal, restoration, and resetting of the granite steps at Bancroft Hall stands as a testament to meticulous planning, craftsmanship, and respect for historic materials. Through careful documentation, controlled handling, and precise reinstallation, Rugo Stone ensured that these iconic steps designed to support generations of marching midshipmen will continue to serve their monumental role well into the future.
