A place of honor, the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial commemorates the nation’s fallen heroes, whose names are engraved in Adair Limestone to be remembered for generations. Originally dedicated in 1991, the memorial reached capacity by 2020 with over 22,000 names. To extend its life, Rugo Stone was engaged in a 2022 expansion that added a 15-inch carved stone coping atop the existing Radial Walls of Remembrance, along with replacement and repair of damaged stone pavers, curbs, walls, inscriptions, and pool elements.
Since completion of the expansion, Rugo Stone has continued engraving new names annually, adding 1,850 names by May 2025. The engraving scope presented three major challenges: matching the style of the original inscriptions, executing precise lettering across curved and radial walls, and maintaining safety while the site remained open to the public. Through extensive mockups and testing, Rugo Stone refined its sandblasting techniques, using specialized acrylic stencils that adhered securely without staining or damaging the limestone.
Custom-built portable tents and sandblasting enclosures were employed to contain dust and debris, ensuring visitors could access the memorial safely throughout the work. Each engraving was carefully reviewed for accuracy, consistency, and fidelity to the original design.
Though it is sobering to witness the ever-growing number of fallen officers, it has been an honor for the Rugo team to contribute to this sacred memorial. For our artisans, engraving these names is not only a technical task but a profoundly moving responsibility, preserving the legacy of service and sacrifice for families, colleagues, and future generations. Each name stands as a permanent testament to courage and dedication, especially felt during Police Memorial Week when loved ones gather to trace the engraved names of those who gave their lives in the line of duty.
